Scroll through enough wellness content and green smoothies start to sound less like breakfast and more like a miracle tonic: melt fat, flush toxins, erase wrinkles, fix your energy, all from one blended cup. The real nutrition research is much narrower than that — and, in a few places, it actively contradicts the hype.
What’s true is more mundane but still useful: most adults don’t eat enough produce. CDC survey data has repeatedly found that only about 1 in 10 U.S. adults meets federal recommendations for vegetable intake, and roughly the same share for fruit. A smoothie built mostly from leafy greens, a modest amount of whole fruit, and water can genuinely help close that gap. Whether it does everything the wellness blogs claim is a separate question — one worth answering with actual studies rather than enthusiasm.
